Olympic National Park Road Trip, July 2022 - Tunnel Creek

Sunday, July 10, we had oatmeal at our campsite.

Then the girls played with fire.

That afternoon, we began an overnight backpacking trip on Tunnel Creek Trail, a 9.4-mile roundtrip.

We saw some of these weird slug things on the trail. They were big and gross.

I think Luc Oddou introduced the girls to this weird and catchy song (video starring dancing llamas): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS9ATzRsWvc. We sang it (or attempted to sing it) lots and lots as we hiked.

I think we hiked in about three miles and then found a spot to camp near an old shelter and near a bunch of giant fallen trees that made such a fun playground for the girls.

Berry digging a poop hole.

We had to hurry to get dinner and hot chocolate done before it got too late and freezing.

Jim had downloaded shows to give the girls a treat that night.

The open-on-one side shack we camped near is in the background here.

More oatmeal and hot chocolate for breakfast Monday morning.

The girls had so much fun running up and down the logs and making their way from one to another. I love how imaginative they can be together. They were kind of high up (it's hard to tell from the footage), so I was relieved nobody fell.

I'm not sure what they girls were doing here. They are fun.

We packed up camp, stashed our big packs, and took daypacks to finish the hike to the ridgetop.

Harrison Lake.

Snow, wet feet, and tired girls made for some serious grumbling.

The views were lovely, but the children were not. There was unhappiness.

The top of the ridge provided grand panoramic views.

The girls' spirits lifted some during the rock throwing.

We spotted a cute little inchworm on the hike down by where we had camped. I'm always pleased when the girls will hold critters.

Wrenzy aptly named him Inchy, and she absolutely loved him. She built him this little habitat, and she said a sweet goodbye when we finally tore her away.

Meanwhile Tiny got in one last session at the log playground.

Again the exhausted children passed out when we got in the car.

Tunnel Creek was a great hike!
