Cikaneks bought a new slide, which provided lots of fun. It lasted a good while but not quite the whole summer.
We went to the Karners' for Fourth of July food and fireworks.
Wrenzy and Nathan worked intently on a project in the Cikaneks' play house.
Ever and Tiny consented to big haircuts. Ever's chopped hair resembled a squirrel or something.
The girlies took turns holding a baby lizard. I was so proud of them but had to decline when they offered it to me.
The girls tried to break into Nathan's room by Spiderman-ing up the side of Cikaneks' house, walking along the railing, and climbing over the railing onto the little balcony. I wasn't around, but Rebecca saw them and told them not to do it again. Crazy girls.
Ever and Leela went to Girl Scouts sleepaway camp at Camp Winacka in Julian for a week.
They sent one shared postcard while they were gone, but it didn't arrive until after they returned.
Pickup day (Friday, July 9):
They said it was really hot, but other than that (and the food), they had a great time.
We celebrated Tiny's fifth birthday that Friday. She requested a unicorn cake like the one I had made for Wren. It's probably the most exciting-looking dessert I'll ever make. Wrenzy chose her unicorn dress for the day to match the cake. Tiny dressed up in her clip-on earrings from the Cadence recital. Sweetest girls.
We invited the Marc and Melanie Oddous, the Susan Oddous, the Wilsons, the Karners (I think), and probably the Cikaneks. I can't remember. Jim came out of the house while we were singing to Tiny, and she ran to him and hugged him.
Tiny wanted a unicorn piƱata. We had one that we'd bought for a previous birthday and forgotten to use, so that worked out nicely.
Ever's exciting week caught up with her, and she passed out on the kitchen floor on Sunday.
The following Friday, we took the kids to Great Wolf Lodge (hotel/water park) in Anaheim for the night. It's expensive, but it was fun. COVID was in full swing, so masks were required everywhere except in the water park area.
Our suite had a fun bunk bed area for the kids.
Ever was in a ridiculous posing phase. Wrenzy started to follow her lead and got her feelings very hurt when I tried to get her to stand normally.
The littles weren't tall enough for some of the waterslides, but they had fun on the lazy river and other stuff. Ever did the scarier slides. She even did the one that just drops straight down. My least favorite part of the experience was the couple of women in thong bikinis. At a family water park. Really? Ever and I had to stand in line on the stairs right behind one of them, which meant her bare behind was in our faces for a very long time. I'm really bitter that bare-bottom swimsuits have become the norm. I don't belong in this era.
Wrenzy started feeling sick Saturday afternoon and came down with a fever. Ever really wanted to get another ride or two in, so I sat with Wren in an isolated area while Jim, Tiny, and Ever finished up. Then we headed home early. I was going to feel really bad if we went there with COVID, but it didn't end up being that.
Back at home, the girls did their nails with stickers.
Ever begged to have a bake sale. I think she mostly wanted an excuse to bake, and she also wanted money. I was reluctant because I knew it would be a lot of work for me. Leela wanted to participate, but Ever and I did all the baking. We baked over the course of days and froze things. This was the making of the Swig sugar cookies:
We made cinnamon rolls, lemon loaf cakes (mini and full-size), chocolate peanut butter cookies, the Swig cookies, giant chocolate chip cookies, and giant Oreo cookies that spread into weird, thin pancakes but still tasted good, I think. While making the cinnamon roll dough, the bread machine walked off the counter (something's wrong with it) and dumped the dough on the ground when it crashed to the floor. I popped the dough back in the machine and used it. Is that terrible?! My little secret. Anna made the menu and warmed the cinnamon rolls we dropped off to her beforehand. She supplied water bottles, juice pouches, and cold brew coffee, but nobody bought beverages. Since we started at 9:00 A.M., the cinnamon rolls were a big hit. Friends from the ward came and supported. Even Marin (Ever's Girl Scout leader) came with her girls. People hung out and ate there by the tennis courts, and it was a nice time. Lots of work but a success.
